New Antikythera Shipwreck Discoveries Exhibited

kithira3-thumb-largeThe Culture Ministry of Greece presented three discoveries from the Antikythera shipwreck in an academic event at the Aikaterini Laskaridi Foundation on Wednesday.
The event entitled “Return to Antikythera” was a presentation of the underwater excavation results and the project’s future. Three important discoveries were exhibited: a spear that belongs to a statue, an oinochoe and piece of a plank.
An international team of scientists organized and implemented the “Return to Antikythera” project in September and October 2014, headed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from Massachusetts, USA, in collaboration with the Greek Culture Ministry and the support of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, as well as other institutions.
The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation has supported the project from the very beginning by putting the ship “Glaros” at the team’s disposal for accommodation as well as logistical support on site, and by aiding the research team in preparing and carrying out the actual research and excavation.
Greek Culture Minister Constantinos Tasoulas and Mayor of Kythera and Antikythera Efstratios Charchalakis addressed the event.
