Athens-Thessaloniki in 3.5 Hours by Rail in 2017

treno-a-708Railway travel time between Athens and Thessaloniki will be reduced to 3.5 hours in 2017 now that the Othryos project is completed.
The Othryos engineering project will allow trains to reach speeds of 160 kilometers per hour, reducing travel time between the capital of Greece and Thessaloniki by one hour.
The Othryos project was delivered by ERGOSE yesterday. When the line is completed in 2017, the railway system between the two cities will be able to serve five times as many passengers.
The Othryos project is one of the largest engineering works ever constructed in Greece and it includes:
A twin tunnel 6.4 kilometers long with a slab track for electric trains and connecting tunnels in every 500 meters for safety reasons. This is the second longest railway tunnel in Greece and one of the biggest in the Balkans.
A technical tunnel 432.5 meters long for electric trains with twin railroad line.
A twin cut & cover after the exit from the twin tunnel with 630 meter branches.
Several road works to service surrounding farmlands and road traffic works for the rural traffic network.
Drainage works for the new railway line, the backfilling of trenches and other necessary works in compliance with environmental prerequisites.
