Yesterday’s heavy snowfall has covered most of Greece in snow, causing traffic jams and leaving cars trapped in provincial highways for hours.
National highways and provincial roads in Peloponnese have been affected the most by the extreme weather conditions. In the roads of Arcadia and Sparta many vehicles had been trapped, rendering them inoperative.
Police are stopping all vehicles without snow tires and are not allowing them to enter parts of the national highways where the snow has turned into ice. On the Tripoli highway, several cars and buses were immobilized for hours with angered passengers complaining to the police that they had to stay in the cold. It is indicative that in the stream of traffic towards Athens, there was a line of trapped cars that was 20 kilometers long. Several vehicles ran out of fuel in the cold.
In the Castle town road of Boeotia in central Greece, a truck that “folded” blocked the highway and created a traffic jam that lasted seven hours.
Despite the fact that traffic police have banned heavy trucks on certain roads for certain hours, several heavy trucks that have been immobilized due to the snow have blocked traffic.
The Greek Coast Guard has stopped the departure of several boats and ferries from Piraeus Port.
In Attica, where the weather is usually mild and snow is rare, there was snowfall in Athens’ northern suburbs Penteli, Agios Stefanos, Vrilissia, Melissia, Kifissia, Nea Eritrea, and Halandri. The mountains of Parnitha and Hymettus around Athens are covered in snow, while meteorologists say that it is possible to see snow in central Athens today.
