An earthquake measuring 3.3 points on the Richter scale struck Athens at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.
Although not particularly strong, the tremor was felt strongly in most parts of the capital as the epicenter was in northern Athens. Seismologists of the Institute of Geodynamics of Athens initially commented that the epicenter of the earthquake was somewhere between Maroussi and Galatsi.
The depth of the earthquake was five kilometers. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages.
Earthquakes have historically caused widespread damage across central and southern Greece, Cyprus, Sicily and other neighboring regions. In January 2014, a series of strong earthquakes on the island of Kefalonia damaged hundreds of homes and injured more than a dozen people.
