New Greek PM Lays Flowers to Kessariani Memorial Instead of Unknown Soldier Tomb

Tsipras-Lodged-Flowers-to-the-Memorial-of-KessarianiTo the Kessariani War Memorial, where he laid flowers in tribute to those executed by the Nazis during the country’s 1941-1944 occupation, went the new Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, straight after his oath before the President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias.
In what is seen as a highly symbolic move, Tsipras, instead of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square, chose to pay tribute to those fallen and executed during the WWII resistance.
It should be noted that dozens of Athenians arrived on the spot in order to applause Tsipras for his decision.
Furthermore, the new Greek PM will finally not hold a meeting with outgoing Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. Instead, the Director of Samaras’ office will meet with the director of Tsipras’ office at the government headquarters in order to hold a briefing.
