The European Commission has proposed a new program that will help 1,633 media employees in Greece relaunch their career through the European Adjustment Fund. The Greek employees used to work in publishing, programming and broadcasting but they were made redundant.
After the dismissal of the 1,633 employees (928 people from programming and broadcasting enterprises and 705 workers from publishing enterprises) due to the financial crisis, the country applied for funding at the EGF. Greek authorities have requested 8.7 million euros in order to implement the program and help media employees make their transition to new jobs. The proposal will be submitted to the European Parliament, awaiting approval by the Council of Ministers.
“Today’s decision will help to prepare over 1,600 people for new jobs. Greek workers are going through a difficult period and we must use all the tools we have at our disposal to provide assistance. I am happy we have been able to respond positively to Greece’s request for EGF support to the redundant workers,” said Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labor Mobility Commissioner Marianne Thyssen.
The EGF program will help media employees find new jobs through career guidance sessions, training, vocational training, allowances and business advice.
In June 2013, the Greek coalition government announced that the national broadcaster, ERT would be closing, and paying off its 2,600 staff members.
