Emergency Eurogroup to be Held Next Wednesday to Discuss Greece

An emergency meeting of the Eurozone member-states’ Finance Ministers is possible to be held next Wednesday, February 11, in Brussels in order to discuss the developments regarding the Greek program. The Eurogroup meeting, to be held on the eve of the European Council, would aim to find a commonly accepted solution concerning the Greek debt relief request that Athens’ new government has requested, the AFP (Agence France-Presse) revealed earlier this week.
According to AFP, the decision is likely to be taken today after the Euro Working Group meeting, which is currently in session. It should be noted that if the information is confirmed, this will be the first Eurogroup meeting since the newly elected Greek government has assumed duties, while it will give the country’s Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis the chance to table his ideas in front of his Eurozone counterparts, as he has assumed during his consecutive meetings with European officials earlier this week. At the same time, the Eurogroup member-states will also have the opportunity to clarify their position toward the Greek proposals, despite many countries’ – and especially Germany’s – opposition to negotiate a new agreement with Athens.
On his behalf, Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who had a first meeting with Varoufakis last week, told Dutch television that “there’s a new government, they won the elections, they have very different ideas, and it is on that basis that we must negotiate… It will definitely take some time.”
