The Star-crossed Lovers of Athens

Love StoryGreek Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Theano Fotiou brought to light the story of a young couple that would have been the perfect love story for a movie. In a Facebook post, Fotiou wrote about the life and struggles of Andreas and Marilena, two star-crossed lovers that did anything in their power to stay together.
Marilena is the daughter of a bourgeois family in Athens, Greece. Her parents made sure that she was educated and provided her with a comfortable lifestyle. On the other hand, Andreas is a migrant from Pakistan who struggled to make ends meet. The couple met five years ago and they have never regretted their decision to stay together ever since.
When Marilena announced her plan to live with Andreas to her family, her parents threatened to disown her. That is when she decided to leave with her partner and never look back. At first, the couple stayed in a small house but due to the Greek economic crisis and the fact that their family was growing -Marilena was pregnant- they were forced to stay with some of Andreas’ friends from Pakistan.
On the day her water broke, Marilena met a nurse name Georgia who worked with a solidarity initiative in the municipality of Fyli in Athens. Georgia was moved by the young woman’s story and did everything in her power to help the couple.
The organization “Solidarity for All” found a small house in Ano Liosia, Athens, where the couple could stay and offered to watch their newborn baby while the parents looked for a job.
Marilena and Andreas were quickly able to stand on their own feet and soon had another baby.
At the moment, they are happily living in their Ano Liosia home with their two children. A few days before the January 25 national elections, the couple got married. Georgia — the nurse — was their koumbara (best woman), since she was the person that helped them get their life back.
Solidarity for All covered the wedding expenses, organizing a beautiful night that they will never forget. The Greek Deputy Minister of Social Welfare was also present at the wedding. She was moved by the couple’s story and decided that she would share it with the world, because even though Greece is a multicultural country, there are people who are still on the fence regarding the subject of migrants. This story might help change their minds.
