Greek Deputy Minister of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction Giorgos Katrougalos announced that the reform process of civil services in Greece should be completed in the next six months. In a recent interview with Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Katrougalos noted that the first bill regarding the public sector would be submitted to the Greek Parliament by March and the second by the end of August.
The current coalition government is planning on making “effective” changes. “I want it to be done in six months. We have to take advantage of the momentum,” stated the Deputy Minister of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction. When asked how much of the previous government’s actions would be changed, Katrougalos noted that he did not wish to be a nihilist. “We will respect certain valuable changes that we made.”
The first legislation bill will include the rehiring of 3,500 public sector employees who were unjustly laid off by the previous government. Furthermore, the Greek Interior Ministry will also implement a new evaluation method in order to determine the job position and hierarchy within civil services.
The new government has also vowed to keep on working on several reforms established by the previous government, such as e-governance in order to make them adjust to their own framework.
“We want to create a state that will reduce social inequalities and provide a safety net,” said the deputy minister. “We are against the spirit of past reforms,” he added, noting that the current changes would be completed gradually over the course of six months.
