Elefsina: Candidate for European Capital of Culture 2021

eleusisThe city of Elefsina, Greece, has submitted a file for its consideration as a candidate to become the European Capital of Culture in 2021.
The submission file was presented during an event on February 17, where it was noted that the title claim aims to aid the city’s dynamic development and its integration on the map of creative cities across Europe. As one of the five sacred cities of ancient Greece but also a prime industrial center in the modern era, Elefsina is a place where opposites meet, creating a beautiful city filled with cultural references.
According to the submission file, Europe is similar to Elefsina as it strives to survive as a single entity and as a European Union. In this perspective, Elefsina finds itself in the heart of the European debate. Adding the important cultural activity that the city has developed in recent decades, it appears that Elefsina presents a series of powerful arguments for its candidacy as the European Capital of Culture in 2021.
Since the initiative is aimed at the future, the event was hosted by two young city residents who have excelled in their respective fields: modern pentathlon world champion and senior student in high school Angelos Vasiliou, and Stella Micha, a third year student at the University of Athens Medical School. The two young hosts worthily represented the new generation and showed their support toward the initiative, making it clear that the candidacy for European Capital of Culture is a matter that concerns all residents and especially young people.
Elefsina mayor Giorgos Tsoukalas mentioned during his speech that the city has a strong cultural profile such as the prestigious institution of Aeschylia, while he also noted the city’s ongoing struggle against environmental pollution.
