32 Tons of Wine to Flow in Northern Greece Fountain

wine-naoussaAs part of the carnival celebrations in Naoussa, northern Greece, the local fountain located in the city’s central square will be filled with 32 tons of dry red wine to help visitors and locals get in a party mood.
Agricultural Cooperative Winemaking VAENI of Naoussa plans on using this opportunity to attract more visitors to the northern Greek city, but also prove that Naoussa is the ultimate “Wine City” in Greece.
The event was first organized in 2008 and, according to VAENI president Giorgos Fountoulis, it was a great hit.
The dry red wine variety is called xinomavro and is mainly produced in Naoussa with locally cultivated grapes. This specific wine variety is distinguished for its rich taste and aroma.
According to the municipality’s website, the vineyards of Naoussa, which has been legally registered as a Wine Zone Designation of Origin, reach 700 hectares. The total production of Protected Designation of Origin wines amounts to 2.5 million liters, 30-40% of which are exported. The region also produces 2,000,000 liters of red, rosé and white wines.
