The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, currently on an official visit to Moscow, in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, requested his personal contribution to efforts aiming to find a viable solution on the Cyprus problem. In response, Putin declared that he is ready to take steps toward that direction, with his focus being drawn on the Turkish side.

The Cypriot President accepted a new invitation to visit Moscow on May 9 to participate in the celebrations for the anniversary of the Russian victory in World War II, while Putin expressed his intention to visit Cyprus.

The meeting between the two countries’ delegations lasted for about 40 minutes more than scheduled, while according to sources, the Russian President expressed his appreciation for Cyprus’ stance within the European Union framework regarding the Ukrainian Crisis and discussed ways to enrich bilateral economic cooperation. Moreover, according to the same sources, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his discontent for some of the United Nations Security Council member-states’ stance on the Cyprus problem. Upon an initiative on behalf of the Russian President, more consultations will take place in the future in order to strengthen the two countries bilateral relations in the fields of business and agriculture. Most importantly, it was stressed that the Kremlin supports Russian investments in Cyprus and referred to the new shipping sector agreement signed between the two countries, which is “not turning against any other country,” as clarified.

In a meeting held earlier between Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Giorgos Lakkotrypis and his Russian counterpart, the two examined ways to strengthen the cooperation in the energy field.

In his three-day official visit to the Russian capital, the Cypriot President is accompanied by Lakkotrypis, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides.
