The Greek unemployment rate rose slightly to 26% of the workforce in December 2014, from 25.9% in November, but fell compared with a 27.3% rate in December 2013, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Thursday.
The statistics service, in a monthly report, said the number of unemployed people totaled 1,233,404 in December, with the unemployment rate among young people aged up to 24 years old remained above 50% (51.2%), while in the 25-34 age group it was 35%.
The number of unemployed people fell by 76,053 compared with December 2013 (-5.8%). The number of employed people totaled 3,505,569, up 17,972 compared with December 2013 (0.5%), but down 24,453 compared with November 2014 (0.7%). The number of economically non-active people totaled 3,371,756.
The unemployment rate among women was 29.3%, significantly higher compared with men (23.4%). The unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 51.2% (56.2% in Dec 2013), in the 25-34 age group it was 35% (36.3%), in the 35-44 age group it was 22.5 pct (24%), in the 45-54 age group it was 20.9% (20.6%), in the 55-64 age group it was 16.4% (17.5%) and in the 65-74 age group it was unchanged at 10.6%.
Macedonia-Thrace (27.3% in Dec 2014 from 29.2% in Dec 2013) recorded the highest unemployment rate among the country’s regions, followed by Attica (27.3%-28.3%), Epirus-Western Macedonia (26.8% – 29.8%), Thessaly-Central Greece (26.2% -26.4%), Peloponese-Western Greece-Ionian Islands (25.5% – 26.4%), Crete (24.3% – 23.8%) and Aegean (19% – 21.8%).
