New Democracy Leader Faces Second Round of Party Wrangling

samarasprofil-thumb-largeNew Democracy leader Antonis Samaras will once again see his leadership challenged when he will meet with the party’s political committee on Sunday.
After a long meeting of the New Democracy parliamentary group where Samaras tried to affirm his position as the leader, there will be a new meeting of the conservative party’s political committee on Sunday.
The party’s political committee is a much larger body than the parliamentary group but it is not expected to upset the in-party equilibrium.
However, party members do not share the same concerns as New Democracy elected MPs, so wrangling is expected. If there is a snap poll, MPs will be elected on the basis of a so-called “list” system, or in the order set by their party leader.
Veteran New Democracy member Dimitris Avramopoulos is also expected to take part in Sunday’s meeting. His participation in New Democracy affairs has been rare ever since he was appointed as European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, and as of last year he spends most of his time in Brussels.
On Thursday, Samaras was pressed by several senior New Democracy officials, including Dora Bakoyannis, Nikos Dendias, Costis Hatzidakis and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to call an emergency convention. He replied that such a meeting would show that there are problems in New Democracy and that would be a “gift to SYRIZA.”
On Friday, Makis Voridis, a key member of the conservative party and a Samaras ally, told the press that it was only seven or eight members of the parliamentary group who asked for an emergency convention. However, Dendias claimed that the number was 20, adding, “I wish that Samaras had accepted the proposal.”
