Greek Deputy Culture Minister: Amphipolis Excavation Doesn't Need Further Financing

Greek Deputy Culture Minister Nikos Xydakis has earlier ruled out the possibility of a potential new funding in support of the Amphipolis excavation. While in a visit on site, where he was toured by archaeologist Katerina Peristeri, the Minister was asked about such a development and explained that the excavation has already received the scheduled financial aid. “There are not many excavations around Greece receiving such aid. At the time, this is not necessary,” he said.
Moreover, Xydakis, who was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Maria Kollia Tsaroucha, described the excavation as a huge project that is currently taking the necessary “breaths.” “At the moment the excavation stage is over. Mrs. Peristeri has already began the discoveries’ study and maintenance,” he added.
The Tomb of Amphipolis was discovered in northern Greece in August 2014. Since then, a team of Greek archaeologists lead by Peristeri were able to excavate the tomb’s four chambers, making various significant discoveries. Over the last four months, they found a beautiful mosaic floor, two Sphinxes guarding the tomb’s entrance, two Caryatid statues and, of course, the skeleton of the person buried in the tomb during Alexander the Great’s era.
