German FinMin: 'The New Greek Government Destroyed All the Trust'

German Bundestag debates 2011 budgetA new verbal attack against Greece was launched by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble ahead of Monday’s meeting between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday, March 23 in Berlin.
Schaeuble was sepaking at a panel in Berlin on Monday where he said that the new Greek government destroyed all the trust that had been rebuilt in the past. He said that up until November Greece was on the right path that could lead to the end of the economic crisis, but this is gone. He also repeated his view that the cause of Greece’s financial woes was that the country lived far beyond its means in the past.
The German minister said that Alexis Tsipras is lying to the Greek people and that he cannot keep his election campaign promises.
Schaeuble also said that he did not expect Athens to introduce higher taxes on ship owners. “Even a radical leftist government won’t keep that promise,” the German minister said. He also said that no foreign investor wants to buy Greek bonds and that the issuing of treasury bills by the Greek government has destroyed investors’ trust.
As for Greece’s demands for World War II reparations, he stressed that there won’t be any more compensation.
Meanwhile, the German chancellor had a telephone conversation with the Greek premier on Monday. After their talk, Merkel invited Tsipras to Berlin on March 23. The Greek prime minister accepted the invitation for the meeting that will take place in the German Chancellery.
