Guards at Athens’ psychiatric institution “Dromokaiteion,” realized early Thursday morning that Vicky Stamatis, wife of also jailed former Greek Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, had escaped from the premises. The room where she was held was found empty and signs that the window latch was broken alarmed police who are searching for her in Athens.
Vicky Stamati was initially jailed in Athens’ central prison, but was later transferred to the mental institution as psychiatrists found she suffers from severe depression.
Stamatis has been accused of money laundering and she had asked repeatedly to be released, but all her petitions ware denied.
Akis Tsohatzopoulos’ wife has been in prison since April 2012 accused of money laundering and accepting illegal funds which the former Minister of Defense received from armament deals.
