Panathinaikos: Head Coach Giannis Anastasiou Signs New Contract (Videos)

The longest standing coach in Panathinaikos‘ recent years, has extended his contract till the summer of 2018. Giannis Anastasiou will become the first Greek coach of the club to start a third season in a row.

Giannis Anastasiou began as Hen ten Cate’s assistant back in 2008 and moved up the ladder in 2013 by taking over the head coach’s position. He helped the team finish 2nd in the league behind champions Olympiakos and lift its first Greek Cup trophy since 2010 by beating PAOK 4-1 in the final.

Even though 2014-15 season didn’t end as wished for the Greens, the fact that Olympiakos’ superiority was questioned – a club with three times their budget – by beating them in early February and being placed just three points behind them was a taste of what the Greek coach is capable of bringing to this young and fresh team.

I’m happy the club and myself are continuing this cooperation. Our philosophy, the most important aspect in order to step up a level and become better, remains the same. Not much talking, only working. Our next goal is to win the championship and do well in the European Cups. The foundation is there, now we need to build”. These were the coach’s first words after his signature was put on his newly extended contract.

After Panathinaikos’ debts came to surface and the team dismantled, no one really expected the Greens to rejuvenate as fast and fight for the championship. However with Giannis Anastasiou’s guidance, that became an actuality and as a result the fans have backed Giannis Alafouzos decision to keep him on deck for the following three years and try to knock down Olympiakos dominance since 2011.

∗ Giannis Anastasiou is also responsibled of the Greens 0-3 away win against rivals Olympiakos last year.
