Numerous Strong Aftershocks in Crete

earthquakeNumerous aftershocks have shaken Crete after the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred on April 16 at 9:07 pm east of Crete and near the Greek island of Kasos. The strongest aftershock measured 5.4 on the Richter scale and it occurred at 5:05 am in the morning of April 17.
The National Observatory of Athens’ Institute of Geodynamics considers the strong tremor to be an aftershock. According to a statement, the earthquake originated 415 kilometers southeast of Athens and the epicenter was located in the coastal area 26 km southwest of Kasos.
The 6.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred last night was followed by several tremors ranging from 3.1 to 5.4, eight of which measured higher than 4. The majority of the tremors were felt throughout eastern Crete, where no damages have been reported yet.
