May 3: International Eat a Pitogyro Day

International-eat-a-pitogyro-dayThis year a different kind of event was organized in Greece. An event with no distinctions between gender, religion or nationality, with no relation to religious holidays. An event that was created to commemorate the great discovery of pitogyro, a Greek food that includes pita, gyro, tzatziki and condiments.
The International Eat a Pitogyro Day was established by Thessalonians through Facebook, with thousands declaring their intention of participating in the “celebration.” As of 2015, the International Eat a Pitogyro Day — the name of the Facebook group that promoted it — will be celebrated on May 3.
“This event has been created to honor the great discovery of pitogyro. Eat gyro, because YOLO (You Only Live Once),” noted the event organizers on their Facebook page. However, they did not forget about their crisis and jokingly added that there would be no free food. It’s a BYOP event – Bring Your Own Pitogyro.
After the event success in Thessaloniki, people in Patras have announced that they will also be taking part in this celebration to honor their favorite Greek food.
The announcement and organization of International Eat a Pitogyro Day shows that even during difficult times, Greeks never lose their sense of humor.
