Greek Government Holds First Journalists' Briefing in 3 Years

gavriil-sakellaridisThe Greek government arranged the first journalists’ briefing for first time in three years. Greek government spokesman Gavriil Sakellaridis stood on the podium on May 4, before Greek and foreign political journalists in order to inform them about the country’s current situation.
The briefing took place at 12:30 pm, when Sakellaridis entered the room, greeted the journalists and proceeded to explain that the government plans on giving an update to journalists twice a week. Greek journalists will be briefed first, followed by foreign correspondents.
The government aims to a comprehensive agreement with the partners by the end of May or in June, which will cover a wide range of the disputed issues, said the Greek government spokesman. He also noted that after the discussion with the delegation that returned from Brussels, Athens now has a clear image of where it stands. “The negotiations are still ongoing,” he added.
“Any progress made in the negotiations, and undoubtedly progress has been made, can constitute a passport to a relaxation of the policy for the financing of the Greek society,” he said.
When asked what in the agreement would entail and what would happen with ENFIA – the special property tax — he said that the government aims to reach an agreement on all these issues. The agreement will be based on the common ground between the two parties and if anything is left unanswered then there will be a new round of talks and negotiations, he added.
The first press briefing in Greece was organized in 1982 by Dimitris Maroudas, another one was organized by Kostas Laliotis in 1985.
