Second Incident Over Food Van on the Island of Lesvos

lesvosThe fragile situation on the island of Lesvos further escalated on Friday when tensions broke out over some food.
A van that was carrying food to the island’s immigrant and refugee settlement called at Kara- Tepe, located a few miles north of Mytilene, the capital of the island, of was raided. A crowd that allegedly consisted of refugees and immigrants scrambled to get the food from the van leading to tension among the group. Some of them climbed on the van and one of the the van’s doors was left hanging as the vehicle made its way out.
A van delivering food was also the subject of a tense episode in the same settlement on Thursday.
The two incidents are allegedly instigated out of fear that what happened on the island of Samos could happen in Lesvos as well. In Samos a catering company that delivered food to immigrant and refugees settlement, ceased their services as it was not being paid.
Furthermore, on Thursday approximately the 4,000 people who live in the settlement protested the lack of toilets in the settlement.
Lesvos is one of the main entry points for the 68,000 refugees and immigrants that have come to Greece through the sea in 2015.
