Dissident House Speaker: 'Will Work with PM to Protect Rights of Greeks'

zoeHouse Speaker Zoe Konstantopoulou was enigmatic coming out of her much-anticipated meeting with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, after her dissidence over Greece’s pending bailout agreement.
“We had an honest and in-depth conversation with the prime minister regarding the developments of recent days and we discussed the institutional initiatives and steps that need to be taken to protect the rights of Greek people and shield democracy in Europe which is tested with Greece and its people being the victims,” Konstantopoulou told reporters coming out of the Maximos Mansion, after she advised them to take the example of the Left and show solidarity and unity in their profession.
“There is an old camaraderie between myself and Alexis Tsipras; there is honesty between us and we share the commitment to protect the rights of Greek people, protect the future of Greece and protect the unity of SYRIZA and the Left that many would like to see ruptured,” she said.
“I presented to the prime minister the steps that I consider are needed for the country’s defense against the Damocles Sword of debt,” she continued.
“I want to say unequivocally that the prime minister and I share the non-negotiable commitment to serve the people and in moments like this, when institutions and people are tested, it is important that the institution representatives can discuss with honesty and immediacy and find solutions, even if they have different views,” Konstantopoulou concluded.
According to sources within the prime minister’s office, Tsipras had expressed concern over the institutional “dissonance” created by her decision to differentiate herself from the collective policy direction of the government and the Parliamentary majority that supports her.
They said the prime minister carefully listened to her views and the meeting was held in a cordial and sincere atmosphere.
