House Speaker Konstantopoulou Insists Greece Should Default

zz--2-thumb-largeHouse Speaker Zoe Konstantopoulou said that Greece should default on its sovereign debt payments while indirectly accusing the prime minister and certain cabinet members for not utilizing the findings of her committee on the debt.
The Parliament President gave a press conference to review her work after six months in government. She spoke a lot about the committee she put together to investigate on the conditions that brought the huge sovereign debt. The committee reported that the debt is not sustainable, it is illegal and it is shameful, therefore it should not be repaid.
Konstantopoulou turned against Bank of Greece governor Yiannis Stournaras for not giving bank transfers information on the debt claiming bank secrecy clauses and for not being cooperative overall. She also questioned his refusal to testify on the committee investigating the Siemens scandal.
The House Speaker also mentioned cabinet members who have spoken negatively about her behavior in parliament and statements she has made regarding the bailout agreement. She didn’t name the individuals, but she implied Deputy Finance Minister Dimitris Mardas and Deputy Citizen Protection Minister Yiannis Panousis. Konstantopoulou is one of SYRIZA’s dissidents who voted against the bailout agreement.
Regarding the friction between her and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, she said there is camaraderie between the two and praised his work. She said that her position dictates that she protects democracy and state institutions. She also said that the prime minister was blackmailed by creditors and signed the onerous bailout agreement.
On the issue of complaints expressed by opposition parties about her work and attitude in the House, Konstantopoulou said that it is no surprise that New Democracy, PASOK and To Potami ask for her removal from the seat. She said that those who are not satisfied with her work are free to submit a motion of censure if they wish.
