Tsipras: Abolition of Tax Exemption for Greek Cabinet and Parliament Members

tsipras-alex-maxim-1070Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced the abolition of tax exemptions for cabinet and parliament members, public utility company directors and independent administrative authority directors.
Tsipras met with State Minister for Administrative Reform issues Christoforos Vernardakis, Deputy Minister for the General Accounting Office Dimitris Mardas and Cabinet Secretary Spyros Sagias.
The Greek Prime Minister declared: “When we put the abolition of farmers’ tax exemptions matter on the negotiations table, we cannot be indifferent and maintain tax exemptions for ourselves.”
“The political system must comply with the public feeling. For this reason, we must immediately table a bill that abolishes tax exemptions for cabinet and parliament members, and rationalize salaries of Ministers, MPs, public utility company directors and independent administrative authority directors,” Tsipras said.
“This is a political initiative not just for financial reasons, but it is also symbolic. It is not required by the current negotiations but it is the political system’s duty not to exclude itself from the [financial] measures taken,” the Prime Minister added.
