12-Year-Old Migrant's Trip to Greece Takes a Toll on His Health

refugee-childA 12-year-old boy, who was born with one kidney and suffers from serious health problems, made the courageous trip from Afghanistan to Greece along with his family, following the refugee path to Europe. However, the young boy had to abruptly stop his journey, since he was in dire need of hospitalization.
Hafiz was just five years old when he became seriously ill and doctors found out that he was born with just one kidney. Nevertheless, at the age of 12, Hafiz, along with his brother, aunt and cousins began the long journey to northern Europe.
While travelling from Turkey to Greece he lost his medicine and the prescription he was carrying. When his family arrived in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, on August 13, the boy had fallen ill.
According to Refugee Solidarity Movement Thessaloniki volunteers, Hafiz’s heart was not beating well, his lungs were not working properly and his blood pressure was elevated. It was determined that he had to be transferred to a local hospital.
“The doctors told us that if we continue the journey, he could pass away after just 24 hours. Hafiz is suffering from heart failure, pulmonary failure and very high blood pressure, as well as other conditions,” said his relative Amir, adding that the rest of the family (4 children, 3 women and two men) are currently staying at a volunteer’s home.
