Greek Political Parties React to Snap Elections

parliamentGreek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras‘ resignation and subsequent proclamation of snap elections in Greece on Thursday evening, prompted the reaction of the Greek political parties, even before the prime minister’s official statement.
ANEL
Prior to Tsipras’ proclamation, the Independent Greeks (ANEL) leader Panos Kammenos, Tsipras’ coalition partner, noted that his party will run independently. However, he said that he will support Tsipras during the pre-election campaign.
TO POTAMI
To Potami party leader Stavros Theodorakis wrote on the party’s web page that Tsipras could have chosen to hold off elections until the economy normalized. Theodorakis accuses Tsipras of attempting to gather popular support before the extent of his mistakes become apparent in the fall. He also paralleled the call for elections with the prime minister’s call for a referendum back in late June
“The elections that will happen in September will cost the Greek society a lot. New shutdowns, unemployment, uncertainty, individual and firms moves abroad. All this however, is of small concern to the idle persons of the party mechanisms. They care about creating tricks that will prolong their power and privileges. And they think they have found one more. But they are wrong. The Greek people have understood that the country will not move forward with lies and old party behavior,”  he wrote.
PASOK
PASOK leadership also accused Tsipras of deflecting his responsibilities yet again. Similarly to Theodorakis, PASOK leader Fofi Gennimata claimed the prime minister is trying to secure his position at the country’s helm before the effects of his actions are felt across the board of the Greek population.
Gennimata proclaimed that PASOK will have a strong and reinvigorated presence in the snap elections.
KKE
The Greek Communist Party (KKE) leader Dimtris Koutsoumpas said KKE will stand with the Greek people against the ultimatums and the government’s deceptions.
In an interview with the Parapolitika radio station earlier on Thursday afternoon,  Koutsoumpas expressed the party’s readiness in the event of snap elections. However, he also noted that Tsipras’ call for election would reduce the ability of the prime minister’s political dissidents within the SYRIZA party as well as political opposition, to consolidate and organize.
