Chaos Near the Greek-FYROM Border from Migrants and Refugees

migrants-FYROMTensions were high in the neutral zone on the border between Greece and FYROM, where hundreds of refugees and migrants are stranded, waiting to enter Greece’s neighboring country.
According to Greek Police, FYROM’s border guards used stun grenades to repel the crowd of at least 2,000 people who had gathered in the area. Furthermore, they added that two people were injured and were transferred to a local health center.
Special police force units arrived in the area with armored vehicles, as well as army emergency forces in an attempt to cut off the flow of refugees to FYROM’s southern border with Greece.
Authorities officially stated that the country’s border will remain open but they plan to significantly reduce the number of undocumented migrants and refugees that enter the country illegally.
According to Reuters, riot police near the border city of Gevgelija, FYROM, are stopping several thousand people from entering the country with tear gas and armored vehicles. The flow of migrants and refugees in Gevgelija increased to 1,500-2,000 people a day. The country’s decision to protect its border came after recent incidents in railway stations, were thousands of people were huddled to board trains heading to Serbia.
