Greek PM Tsipras Declines Meeting with Main Opposition Leader

maximouThere is no room for programmatic convergence between Greece’s main opposition New Democracy and ruling coalition partner SYRIZA or forming a government in the current parliament, government sources said on Sunday, explaining Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ refusal to meet with New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis who is in the process of an exploratory mandate granted on Friday.
“New Democracy President Evangelos Meimarakis contacted Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras this morning to request a meeting in the framework of his exploratory mandate. The Prime Minister explained to the New Democracy leader that there is no chance of forming a government in the current parliament, which is why he immediately handed the mandate to the President of the Hellenic Republic,” the sources said.
For this reason, he explained that there is no point in meeting with him to discuss forming a government as Tsipras believes that there is no possibility or chance of a convergence between the two parties.
