UNICEF: One Third of Refugees in Greece Are Women and Children

refugee-childrenUNICEF reported that one third of migrants and refugees arriving in Greece are women and children, noting that their number has tripled in the last three months.
The number of women and children who leave their countries to escape violence and cross the border between FYROM and Greece has tripled in the last three months, said UNICEF spokesman Christophe Boulierac during a press conference in Geneva. The organization has estimated that around 3,000 migrants and refugees are crossing the border between Greece and FYROM on a daily basis, seeking entrance into northern European countries.
According to data released by FYROM authorities, 80% of migrants and refugees crossing the border between Greece and FYROM come from Syria, 5% from Afghanistan and 5% from Iraq. Since June 2015, there are records of more than 52,000 migrants and refugees having crossed the border near the town of Gevgelija. However, the organization estimated that approximately the same number has passed through without any record.
The majority of refugees travel for months, under terrible conditions, while many suffer from dehydration or diarrhea, noted Boulierac. “Despite the best efforts of the government and partners on the ground, including UNHCR, they need more water and greater access to sanitation and hygiene facilities. Many are deeply distressed and some need medical assistance,” he added.
