Germany to Double Aid to Greece for Refugees to 2.4 Million Euros, Berlin Says

migrants-drowningGermany plans to double aid currently given to Greece for dealing with the refugee crisis to 2.4 million euros, the German foreign ministry announced.
“The foreign ministry is doubling to 2.4 million euros the sums given until now in the framework of humanitarian aid, through the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Red Cross. In addition, the German government will assist Greece in the recording and medical care of the refugees,” the announcement said.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in a statement, noted that Germany had decided to once again double its aid to Greece in response to the large numbers of refugees arriving there. In this way, Berlin was signalling that Greece was being exceptionally burdened by the crisis and that Germany did not have only demands but also offered active support, he added.
