Greek Authorities Arrest German National for Child Pornography Distribution

child pornographyA 49-year-old German national was arrested in Crete for distributing child pornography through the internet. The man was arrested after an investigation by the Department of Electronic Crime, which is still ongoing after several months, as part of the global operation to combat child pornography, code-named Pacifier.
As part of the operation, Greek police conducted investigations that lasted several months on the TOR network, to identify users who are involved in owning and distributing child pornography material. In particular, they conducted a p2p (peer-to-peer) investigation on file sharing networks and identified offenders who were guilty of sharing videos and photos of child sexual abuse.
A digital data analysis was conducted that located the suspect’s digital traces in Greece. The data was brought to the Prosecutor’s Office at Athens District Court, which issued a decree to lift the confidentiality of communications. The Greek Electronic Crime Division was therefore able to identify an electronic trail leading to the offender’s Internet connection in Crete.
The ongoing digital police investigation located the 49-year-old, who had illegally gained access to an Internet connection and was using it to download child pornography files.
Digital media was seized and sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for further investigation. The 49-year-old German citizen who remains unidentified will be led to the Prosecutor in Crete’s Chania in the coming days.
