Greece's Former Immigration Dep Makes Controversial Comment About Refugees

Tasia ChristodoulopoulouFormer deputy minister of immigration policy Tasia Christodoulopoulou said that locals on Greek islands make a lot of money out of the refugee overflow.
This was yet another controversial statement made by Christodoulopoulou who also said that the real influx of refugees took place after the SYRIZA-ANEL coalition government resigned.
In the past, the former deputy has said things like once refugees arrive in Athens, they “disappear.” Or, in another instance, she said that migrants who camp out on city squares and public parks are simply “sunbathing.”
On Tuesday, Christodoulopoulou gave an interview to ThePressProject web television. When asked about the refugee overflow on Greek islands such as Kos and Lesvos and the damage it causes to the Greek economy, she replied that locals take advantage of the refugees and make a lot of money.
“The islands got rich from the refugees. Syrians, since all of them have money, stay in hotels. They shop at local stores, there is unbelievable turnover in local markets, plus illegal transactions. [Locals] have reached the point of asking for money to let them charge their phone batteries. Because Greeks always find a way to take advantage of a situation,” Christodoulopoulou said.
