Cypriot Dispute: Christian & Muslim Religious Leaders Mutually Involved in Peace Talks

cyprusCyprus’s Christian and Muslim leaders met with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in the context of the Cypriot dispute peace talks on Thursday.
Peter Weiderud, the President of the Swedish InstituteĀ in Alexandria and the head of Swedish Embassy umbrella program that seeks to involve Cyprus’s religious leaders in peace talks, noted that during the meeting the leaders of the two religious communities argued for free access to religious spaces. He added that following the meeting the religious leaders reiterated their support for peace talks.
The Associated Press reports that WeiderudĀ claimed that this kind of meeting has not been held before and demonstrated thatĀ peace in Cyprus can be facilitated throughĀ the involvement of the country’s religious leaders.
