European Council President Donald Tusk signaled Europe’s willingness to assist in the development of peace talks between the two sides of Cyprus’s 41-year-old division and highlighted the significance of the following months for a successful resolution.
Following his meeting with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades on Friday, Tusk emphasized the European Union’s full support to the peace efforts, according to the Associated Press. He also claimed Anastasiades and Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci provide a real opportunity for the success of the peace talks, which resumed under their guidance on May 15, 2015.
Tusk met with Anastasiades on Friday to discuss a number of topics, including the peace talks, the refugee crisis and developments in the Middle East, with the European Council President noting the importance of Cyprus in the region.
Tusk will meet with Akinci later on Friday afternoon.
