European Parliament Member Sofia Sakorafa is the lastest SYRIZA member to leave the party after former prime minister Alexis Tsipras signed Greece’s third bailout memorandum.
Sakorafa is the second SYRIZA MEP who abandons the party, after Nikos Chountis, who has already joined the offshoot Popular Unity led by Panagiotis Lafazanis.
Sakorafa has close ties with former house speaker Zoe Konstantopoulou who joined Popular Unity. The two party members had cooperated in the special parliamentary committee that investigated the sovereign debt.
The former party member did not specify her next political move, but she said she will ally with the forces who said “no” in the July memorandum.
“It is evident that I cannot support any government or policy that enforces unpopular measures… I believe there is another way, socially necessary and historically imperative that is also politically feasible… Greek society will be tried after September 21st, and we must be prepared. In this direction, I will take action within our country. The road is difficult but we will walk with the powers that emerged from the July 5th referendum.” reads the MEP’s statement.
