Donald Tusk Announces EU Refugee Summit on Sept. 23

Donald TuskEuropean Council President Donald Tusk announced via his Twitter account on Thursday that he has convened an urgent European Union summit on the refugee crisis this upcoming Wednesday, September 23.
The EU’s Interior Ministers are scheduled to meet on September 22 to discuss how to handle this refugee crisis. In their last meeting on Monday, these ministers were unable to reach an agreement on how to collectively manage the more than 300,000 migrants and refugees that have come into Europe this year.
Earlier on Thursday, the EU parliament formally endorsed the European Commission’s plan to split 120,000 refugees among the union’s member states, during an emergency vote.

Croatia Issues Warning
In the face of violent resistance from Hungarian security forces at Serbia’s border with Hungary, migrants and refugees have altered their route in the past few days and have attempted to move further into the EU from Serbia into Croatia.
The Croatian Interior Ministry notes that by Thursday noon local time 7,300 people had entered the country in the past day. Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic proclaimed that the country cannot take in any more refugees and migrants.
Although Croatia is part of the European Union, it is not a Schengen Area treaty signee.
