Over 210,000 First Time Asylum Seekers in EU in Second Quarter of 2015

migrantsDuring the second quarter of 2015 (from April to June 2015), 213,200 first time asylum seekers applied for protection in the European Union (EU), up by 15 pct compared with the first quarter of 2015 and by 85 pct compared with the second quarter of 2014.
In particular, the number of Syrians and Afghans rose considerably to reach almost 44,000 and 27,000 respectively. Regarding Greece, the asylum applications between the first and second quarters of 2015 increased by 10 pct.
Specifically, 2,616 asylum applications were made in the first quarter of 2015, and 2,865 in the second quarter. This figure represents 1.3 pct of all new asylum applications in the EU.
Most asylum applications in Greece were made by Syrians (965, or 34 pct of all applications), from Afghans (440, 15 pct) and Pakistanis (345, 12 pct).
During the second quarter 2015, the highest number of first time applicants was registered in Germany (80,900 first time applicants, or 38 pct of total first time applicants in the EU), followed by Hungary (32,700, or 15 pct), Austria (17,400, or 8 pct), Italy (14,900, or 7 pct), France (14,700, or 7 pct) and Sweden (14,300, or 7 pct).
Compared with the population of each Member State, the highest rates of registered first time applicants during the second quarter 2015 were recorded in Hungary (3,317 first time applicants per million inhabitants), ahead of Austria (2,026) Sweden (1,467) and Germany (997).
