Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday announced his candidacy for New Democracy president, after the conservative party’s defeat on Sunday’s election in Greece.
The lawmaker spoke on Skai television saying that he will be candidate for the leadership and that he “can make the difference.”
Mitsotakis said that he doesn’t want to see New Democracy divided into Mitsotakis supporters, Samaras supporters and Karamanlis supporters, but he would prefer every party MP to be recognized by their skills and abilities. He urged candidates to expose themselves to the judgment of society and party supporters.
The MP said that New Democracy still has an identity, even though that it has faded a bit, and that it has lost contact with a part of society and must regain ties with that part.
Meanwhile, it is uncertain yet whether Vangelis Meimarakis, the man who led the party in the election, will be a candidate. So far he said he will not because he disagrees with the grass-roots voting procedure. He has been popular among party members and colleagues and his performance during the campaign has been lauded. Meimarakis will return Thursday from Brussels after the meeting of the European People’s Party and will most likely be more specific about his intentions.
Analysts say that if Meimarakis decides to run, he will most likely be reelected. The rest of the potential candidates will wait to see what Meimarakis will do before they step up.
