U.S. President Obama Congratulates New Greek Prime Minister on Victory

Obama_TsiprasU.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday spoke to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras over the telephone and congratulated him on his electoral victory.
According to a White House announcement, President Obama looks forward to working with the Greek government as it takes steps to implement the necessary reforms in order to return to growth and to achieve debt sustainability within the euro area.
The U.S. President also pledged U.S. solidarity with Greece and the European Union in response to the surge in refugees and migrants, and reiterated the U.S. commitment to helping Syrians and other asylum seekers in need of humanitarian relief.
The Greek prime minister is departing for the U.S. on Saturday for Sunday’s United Nations 70th General Assembly. During his five-day stay in New York, Tsipras will meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and have bilateral talks with his peers. He will also have an informal meeting with President Obama during the reception for foreign leaders.
The prime minister and Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias are expected in New York on Saturday afternoon. They will be accompanied by Minister of State Nikos Pappas, Economy Minister Giorgos Stathakis, government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili, Foreign Ministry Secretary General and other officials.
