ELSTAT: Numerous Tourists Choose Illegal Accommodations for Their Stay in Greece

greek-tourismThe Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reports that based on 2014 data on tourist arrivals and overnight stay in various Greek hotels, it appears that the phenomenon of illegal accommodation sites is constantly growing in the country, causing great problems for the authorities, due to tax evasion.
According to ELSTAT arrivals in Greek hotels and campsites grew by 8.7% in 2015, reaching a total of 17,743,493 visitors. The number of foreign tourists who stay in Greek accommodation facilities rose by 13.3% compared to 2013, while the increase in tourism arrivals in Greece reached 23%.
ELSTAT’s data is not fully accurate, since it does not include people who stayed at legitimate rooms for rent, as well as the tourists who arrived in Greece for day-trips. However, it was estimated that a large number of tourists arriving in Greece choose to stay in illegal accommodation facilities, where the owners practice tax evasion.
