Candidates for New Democracy's Leadership Race Still Uncertain as Georgiadis Declares Interest

New DemocracyWith the future of New Democracy‘s leadership up for grabs, new names were added to the mix on Monday, just a few days before the October 2nd deadline for nomination submissions.
After Kiriakos Mitsotakis and Apostolos Tzitzikostas, New Democracy MP Adonis Georgiadis seems to have nominated himself as a candidate in the party’s presidential race through a post on his Twitter account.
“I put myself and my path in politics in the hands of the voters and the friends of New Democracy,” Georgiadis wrote on Monday evening.
Georgiadis, who joined New Democracy in 2012 from the far-right party LAOS, is well-known for his frequent and spirited participation in panel discussions on nationally syndicated Greek television stations. The former Greek Health Minister is also an active social media user.
Earlier in the day New Democracy interim president Evangelos Meimarakis told reporters that he is still considering whether he will run for the party’s leadership.
In order for an interested candidate to run in the party’s presidential race, exactly 50 members of the party’s political committee or 396 member’s of the party’s last National Conference must officially support this individual with their signatures. In each case, members who submit their signature in favor of one candidate cannot do the same for another, according to New Democracy’s protocol. This essentially limits the number of candidates that can run for the party’s presidency.
