Greek Govt Spokesperson: Our Main Aim Is to Attract Investments

cli3-708The presentation of the importance of debt restructuring and the creation of the dynamics to attract investments is the main aim of the Greek mission in New York on the occasion of the 70th United Nations General Assembly.
According to Greek government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili, it is crucial for Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the Greek mission to make the sovereign debt restructuring an issue to be discussed in as many international forums as possible.
“This is an opportunity to have as many meetings as possible on this multidimensional policy we are developing. At this point we are interested to talk about the Greek debt with as many people as possible so that we get the response and the aid that we need. We consider that the agreement we signed in the summer and our program are depending on debt sustainability,” Gerovasili said.
“Our second aim is to talk with as many people about growth and the next steps we need to take. We estimate that there should be a development shock in order to balance the sensitive points of the agreement and offset the weight of recessionary measures it includes,” the government spokeswoman said.
Furthermore, Gerovasili said that Greece should rebuild confidence to investors. “We need to bring changes, put a stop to corruption, bureaucracy and slow judicial procedures, so that we offer a stable and secure environment for investments,” she said. “By bringing investments, we also tackle the unemployment problem. These two are interdependent,” she added.
Regarding revenues and the measures required by the bailout agreement, Gerovasili argued that the bailout agreement contains many recessionary measures and high taxes that would not help investments. “Our big bet is to collect taxes. The more taxes we collect, the sooner we’ll go to a more fair tax distribution. Our aim is to increase revenues, then we can negotiate better taxation terms,” the government spokesperson said.
