Greece's George Dassis to Lead EU's European Economic and Social Committee

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) on Thursday elected new president, Greece’s trade unionist George Dassis.
The EESC, which acts as a bridge between the European Union and civil society, elected with an overwhelming majority their new president, who represents the workers’ group, a New Europe report said.

Dassis will head the institutions with his two vice-presidents, UK’s Michael Smyth, responsible for budgetary matters and Portugal’s Gonçalo Lobo Xavier, responsible for communication. The president and the two vice-presidents are elected for two and a half years

The three officials pledged to set out a mandate “which will be useful to the people of Europe, and will be devoted entirely to them,” as Dassis said. The new mandate will continue to put emphasis on social, economic and territorial cohesion within the European Union. The work program supports a special investment plan for increased employment. It also prioritizes digital single market, the creation of a new migration policy, and the development of a genuine Energy union, according to New Europe.

The EESC is a consultative voice of the EU which carries the responsibility to promote the development of a more participatory European Union.

George Dassis is representative of the Greek General Confederation of Labour (GSEE) to the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), to the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC, formerly ICFTU) and to the International Labour Office (ILO).

He is a member of the EESC from 1981 to 1990 as president of the regional section and from 2002 until today. From 2004 until 2008 he has been President of the ECO section of the EESC. He was President of the Workers’ Group of the EESC from 2008 to 2015.
