refugees-lesvosA number of different shipwrecks in the East Aegean Greek Sea has left seven people dead, including five children.
The Hellenic Coast Guard conducted a rescue operation after a boat carrying migrants and refugees capsized north of East Aegean Greek island of Lesvos. Although 38 people who had been aboard were saved, two refugee children and one 22 year old man passed away.
Two children and a 61-year-old woman drowned off the coast of the Agathonisi island later on Wednesday. The Hellenic Coast Guard along with Frontex agents had been looking for a boat that had gone missing earlier in the day.
In another shipwreck on Wednesday, one five year old girl drowned off the coast of the island of Samos, while two adults are still missing, according to Greek media reports.
The ongoing refugee crisis has seen more than 500,000 people enter the European Union’s border through Greece since the beginning of the year. In their effort to reach Greece, dozens of boats have sunk resulting in numerous drownings.
