Greek PM Tsipras to Visit Turkey to Discuss Refugee Crisis

tsipras_davoutoglu-735x459Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is to visit Ankara in the second half of November to discuss the refugee crisis with his Turkish counterpart, Ahmet Davutoglu.
On Monday, Tsipras called Davutoglu on the telephone and congratulated him on his re-election and party victory in Sunday’s election in Turkey. The time frame of the meeting was decided during their telephone conversation.
According to a report on real.gr, citing sources from the European Commission, the visit has been agreed on by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EC President Jean-Claude Juncker.
Allegedly, Tsipras has asked Merkel and Juncker to give Greece a central role in the refugee issue as it is the first point of entry to Europe for refugees.
Tsipras wants to assume a bigger responsibility on the refugee crisis in collaboration with the European Union. He will visit Ankara to discuss the issue with Turkey as a representative of the EU, according to the report.
According to a statement issued by the Maximos Mansion, “Alexis Tsipras confirmed to Mr. Davutoglu that he accepts the invitation the Turkish prime minister had extended to him while in New York. The search for the date of the meeting is already in progress and it will take place in the immediate future.”
