Strike by Greek Seafarers to Continue as Refugees Remain on Greek Islands

ferry-strike-300x137The Panhellenic Seamen’s Organization (PNO) has decided to extend its current strike for another 48 hours.
The original 48 hour strike began on Monday morning and officially ends on Wednesday at 6 am. Every ferry in Greece is currently docked at some port across the country.
‘It is well known that seafarers are going through an unprecedented demolition of their employee and social security rights, which results in the destruction of these very few that have remained, after five years of bailouts (the first and second ones), which the SYRIZA- ANEL government is promoting based on the third bailout,” the PNO’s announcement reads.
The original strike has already had an immediate effect on the ongoing refugee crisis, as it has effectively paused the transportation of refugees from the East Aegean Greek islands to the Port of Piraeus and the port of Kavala in Northern Greece. This government sanctioned transportation has been carried out since this past August.
The Greek government has asked the PNO to make an exception and transport the refugees or at least allow them to stay in the ships that were intended to transport them until the strike is over. The PNO will discuss the issue in a meeting later on Tuesday, ANA-MPA reports
