Almost a Quarter of Greeks are Pensioners, Says New Report

OAEDA little over 30% of the total Greek population has a job, while almost 25% of it is composed by pensioners, according to the numbers included in a report published on Monday by Greek newspaper “Ta Nea.”
The Greek population was 10,816,286 according to the 2011 census while the CIA’s World Factbook estimated it to have been 10,775,643 in July 2015.
There are 3,591,407, employed persons in Greece according to “Ta Nea.” Their average wage after tax is 815 euros. At the same time half a million people are taking on part-time jobs with an average salary of 345 euros, while 70% of new job openings are part-time jobs. Those who are actually employed are facing their own challenges as over one million people who work in the private sector have not been paid for at least one month and up to five months.
The newspaper further notes that there currently 2,656,007 pensioners in Greece. Around 60% of these pensioners receive monthly pensions of less than 700 euros, while 44.8% receives less than 665 euros each month.
High unemployment rates have been a prevalent problem for Greece for the past few years. “Ta Nea” reports that there are 1,196,736 unemployed persons in the country and there are 350,000 families without a single employed member. Seventy-Eight percent of those without a job are considered to be long-term unemployed meaning that they have been without a job and have been actively looking for one for more than two and a half years. “Ta Nea” reports that 48.5% of those unemployed are people between the ages of 18 and 24. What is more is that 90% of those unemployed are not receiving any kind of help, such as unemployment benefits by the state.
Overall, Greece has 3,296,280 persons who are not employed and at the same time are not looking for employment either.
