Turks Gather in Thessaloniki to Commemorate Kemal Ataturk's Death

kemalThousands of people have traveled from Turkey to the city of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece to commemorate the 77th anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk‘s death, in his childhood home.
Kemal Ataturk, who is considered the father of the modern Turkish nation, grew up in Thessaloniki after being born there in 1881 as Mustafa Kemal. Kemal died on November 10 1938 in Turkey from liver cirrhosis.
Greek media report that 3,000 people have made the trip from Turkey to Thessaloniki since Friday, November 6 in order to visit Ataturk’s house, which later became a museum in his honor. Two minutes of silence were held on Tuesday morning by those visiting and surrounding the house.
Among those who made the trip to Thessaloniki are representatives from 140 businesses from the Turkish city of Smirni as well as students from ten different Turkish schools.
