Greek media report that another four people lost their lives from a second shipwreck that took place off the coast of the Turkish city of Izmir on Wednesday.
Turkey, which officially hosts 2.2 million Syrian refugees, is the usual point of departure for numerous migrants and refugees traveling by sea in dangerous conditions in their attempt to reach the Greek islands, their gateway to other European Union countries.
Since the beginning of the year, 580,125 migrants and refugees have arrived in Greece via the sea, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR). Furthermore, more than 454 people have lost their lives or remain missing after crossing the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece in the first 10 months of 2015, noted Amnesty International.
At the summit taking place on Wednesday and Thursday in Valletta, Malta, 60 European and African leaders will try to tackle the causes of the migration flow from Africa, in order to reduce the annual number of refugees who try to reach the northern European countries.
